Paralyzed Veterans Urges Congress to Act
December, 2006
Washington, DC – Congress will return this week for one last week of work on legislation still pending in the
109th Congress. The House Republican leadership plans to pass a continuing resolution that would extend
government operations through February 15, 2007—one week after President Bush submits his budget for
fiscal year 2008. The continuing resolution would force the Department of Veterans Affairs to operate at FY
2006 funding levels. Enacting a continuing resolution funding VA at FY 2006 funding levels would have a
drastic impact on the health-care services being provided to veterans.

Washington DC- Paralyzed Veterans of America (Paralyzed Veterans) supports the findings of a government task force examining how benefits are delivered to the nation's newest veterans, and urges immediate implementation of those recommendations.
Headed by Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Jim Nicholson, The Report of the Interagency Task Force on Returning Global War on Terror Heroes to the President details 25 recommendations to improve delivery of government services to returning members of the armed forces.
"This report indicates what needs to be done to properly take care of our veterans," stated Randy L. Pleva, Sr., Parayzed Veterans national president. "For a disabled veteran, the transition from the DOD military medical system to the VA medical system should be speedy, seamless and dignified. The Walter Reed situation revealed that often this is not the case."
Among the recommendations is a proposal to develop a system of co-management and case management for returning service members to facilitate ease of transfer from DOD care to VA care. Other ideas to speed transition involve the evaluation of disabilities so those individuals deemed unfit for a return to active duty will proceed directly to the VA system.
"It is encouraging to know that the VA is attempting to improve its system," stated Nancy Hogan, associate executive director for veterans benefits. "Our highly trained and effective service officers will continue their mission in providing assistance to our active military personnel and veterans to get all the benefits to which they are entitled."
Founded in 1946, Paralyzed Veterans of America (Paralyzed Veterans) is the only congressionally chartered veterans service organization dedicated solely for the benefit and representation of individuals with spinal ccord injury or disease. Paralyzed Veterans is a dynamic, broad-based organizaion with more than 19,000 members in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
